Drain and Press

The Drain and Press action is the final step in moving your lots on skins (tracked in weight) to lots tracked in volume. A Drain and Press can be recorded as a direct action or scheduled as task in a work order.

This article covers:

Drain and Press via direct action:

The Drain and Press action can only be recorded on one drain lot at a time.

1. Select the lot to drain.

2. Select all or some vessels to drain.

All weight in a single vessel must be drained; however, not all vessels in a lot need to be included in the Drain and Press action.

3. Next, select whether to a) Separate or b) Combine the free run and press fraction(s).

a) Separate free run and press fraction(s)

Free Run

  • Select the Free Run lot
  • Select one or more vessels, and fill in the volume(s)

Press

  • (optional) Enter Press instructions
  • (optional) Fill in Press Fraction details
  • Select the lot to press into
  • Select one or more vessels to press into, and fill in the volume
  • Click   for more press fractions

*A breakdown of yield per press fraction is provided in the summary at the bottom of the action.

b) Combine free run and press fraction(s)

Free Run and Press

  • (optional) Fill in Press instructions
  • Select a lot to drain and press into
  • Select one or more vessels to drain and press into, and fill in the volume

Drain and Press via work order:

The Drain and Press task can only be created for one drain lot at a time.

  • Select whether to let cellar staff choose the vessels or select specific vessels to drain and press into. Fill in the expected volume if you choose specific vessels.

Press

b) Combine free run and press fraction(s)

How to Drain and Press multiple lots into a single lot

via Direct Action

Each Drain and Press action must be recorded for each drain-lot separately.

1. After creating the Free Run or Press Fraction lot (you most likely retained the lot code or created a new lot during the first Drain and Press of your group of lots), select 'Combine with existing lot' for the Free Run and/or Press Fraction(s).

2. Select your vessels

From the vessel selector, you can choose to add volume to partially filled vessels or to choose new, empty vessels to fill. To select new vessels to add to an existing lot, make sure to change the Contents filter to show empty vessels.

3. Add volume to your vessels

To Drain and Press multiple lots together:

Since a Drain and Press action can only be recorded on one Drain lot at a time, the total fill of the Free Run and/or Press lot(s) must be attributed proportionally to each contributing Drain lot.

      FAQs

Q: What if I am pressing lots on top of each other?

A: Because InnoVint allows only one drain lot at a time, we recommend transferring some tonnage (what would be the equivalent in gallonage produced) into the subsequent lot to be pressed. This way the components will carry over into the next lot and only one Drain and Press action is required.

Q: Why am I getting this error message when I select my drain vessel(s)?

      A. The Drain and Press action is designed to transition lots tracked on skins (must) from being tracked in weight to being tracked in volume. It assumes that you are pressing off of skins. If you previously recorded a Process Fruit to Volume (instead of a Process Fruit to Weight) action on this lot, then you will not be able to use the Drain and Press action, as the lot has already been "pressed" in InnoVint.

Instead, use a Transfer action. Transfer allows you move volume out of the current vessel and into the new destination vessel. It also allows you to transfer into one or more lots. Use the +Add lot option to add "press cuts" to the action.

Optional: In addition to a Transfer, you may also record a Custom Action. Edit the title of the action to say "Drain and Press." This way, when you look back on your lot history, you will see "Drain and Press" and can quickly identify what date that action occurred. Another tip is to link to the Transfer action in the action notes to tie it all together.
